Why I chose Nutrition
As a collegiate track & field competitor, I spent my undergrad years researching how the body works and the impact of diet on sports performance. After graduating from the University of New Mexico in 2006 with my degree in Biology, I began working in the healthcare field and training for fitness shows. Although I hadn't yet decided to specialize in nutrition, competing in the fitness industry gave me an outlet to focus again on nutrition and experiment with various diets to lose fat and gain muscle.
Ironically, shortly after my fitness career began I fell very ill. By 2009 I'd been in and out of the hospital numerous times and found myself so sick I could no longer hold a job. Through a series of fortunate and ironic events, I discovered that Celiac Disease (an autoimmune reaction to gluten) runs in my family and was able to experience first hand the impact that a change in diet can have on health.
This life changing experience and my interest in contest dieting led me to make nutrition my profession, and in 2012 I finished my dietetic internship and graduated with my master's degree in Nutrition.
